Why you should be a tourist in your hometown more often
You don't have to go on holiday to be a tourist
One thing I’ve learned from living overseas these past few months is that you don’t necessarily need to leave your hometown to feel like a tourist.
Moving to a new city opened my eyes to how much there can be to explore in just one place, and that place could easily be your own hometown.
Discovering new experiences and places can be so much fun, and often, you don’t have to travel far to find them.
Every city or town has hidden gems and fun activities you might not even realise are there. When you’ve lived somewhere your whole life or for a long time, it’s easy to take it for granted and forget to explore the area around you.
No matter where you live, there’s always something worth discovering if you look for it.
Here are my tips for how to be a tourist in your hometown:
Google “things to do in {insert name of hometown here}” and see what comes up
Watch Reels and TikToks of things to do in your hometown, I find that they can often recommend unique things to do that you won’t necessarily find on Google
See if your town offers a free walking tour
Take photos around your hometown as if you were a tourist
Go explore a suburb you’ve never visited before
Visit popular tourist attractions in the off-season
Lookup popular restaurants in your hometown and go have a meal at one of them you’ve never been too
Find a lookout and go watch the sunset
Head out of town on a hike
Now go head out and explore your hometown, you might be surprised by just how much it has to offer!
Weekly update
Nothing super exciting to report back about this past week. We’re still at the same events venue Workaway and it’s gotten a little better, but not by much. The work is just quite boring, the owners are really bad communicators and it’s so isolated that it’s not really possible to leave the property when we’re not working. We’re trying to make the most of it and just get through the next few days we have left here. We had a nice day off on Sunday at least and did a little hike to a nearby lake with the other volunteers.

Also a very sad update: we’ve almost run out of Vegemite. Thank you to everyone who has offered to send us more, we’re hoping to find some in Lisbon when we’re there next weekend!
